Roz Savage (first - and so far only - woman to row solo across the world’s “Big Three” oceans, UK)

Roz Savage MBE is best known for being the first woman to row solo across the world's "Big Three" oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian. Her adventures involved spending several months at a time completely alone at sea, often thousands of miles from dry land. While she was on the oceans, she used her blogs, vlogs, talks, books, and social media to raise awareness of our ecological crisis. She holds four Guinness World Records for services to fundraising and the environment. Before her eco-awakening inspired her to set out to sea, Roz was a management consultant for 11 years, doing a conventional office job. But somewhere deep inside she felt there was more to life than doing a job she didn't like to buy stuff she didn't need. So she quit her job, and committed to crafting a life of greater meaning and purpose. Since she rowed her last ocean in 2011, Roz has completed a doctorate on the challenges facing humanity as we try to shift to sustainable ways of living, bringing in ideas from economics, politics, psychology, neuroscience, systems thinking, and spirituality. Her research forms the basis of her fourth book, The Ocean in a Drop: Navigating from Crisis to Consciousness, which came out in November 2022. She lives in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and works primarily as a keynote speaker, speaking to corporate audiences, schools, universities, and other groups in the UK and internationally. She is planning to enter UK politics.

Session Details

Traditionally, ideas of success have tended to involve fame, fortune, and the accumulation of possessions. But research shows us that measuring our success by these external metrics leads to dissatisfaction, financial worries, and mental health issues. Right now a shift is taking place, away from the self-centredness and materialism of the past, towards lives of greater creativity, purpose and contribution. For most of us, the things that will make us proud of a life well lived are healthy relationships, a sense of belonging, and the knowledge that we left the world a bit better than we found it. In this session, Roz tells the story of how her life has confirmed the truth of these findings, and offers practical pointers on how to craft a life worth living.
